"Like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on." --Steve Jobs
The end of the year seems like the right time to reflect on a business progress and the progress we have made at both Youngs and our sister store, the Furniture Market!
It has been a busy year and, at times, an exhausting year for all-but a job well done! Thank you to everyone!
The past year has also allowed me, someone with a bit less tenure than most at Youngs, to reflect on what makes this business successful. In times as difficult as these, when surviving as a business let alone prospering, seems impossible. However Youngs Furniture has done more than just survive we have progressed and flourished.
To be in business for 80 years is a huge accomplishment but to be in business for 80 years with such a solid reputation as Youngs- that's phenomenal. That does not happen without much hard work and the critical understanding that a successful business is about growing and maintaining positive relationships.
Good relationships are not just the ones you have with your customers. They are the relationships you have with employees and co-workers. They are the partnerships formed when working with manufacturers and they are the relationships you cultivate with other local business owners.
It is easy to forget, but the relationships with those around us, are just as important as numbers, analytics, and profits. No business has ever been successful without the collaboration of many creative people.
Cementing bonds and creating loyalty means traveling to manufactures and having that face time with one another. Nourishing that collaboration.
It means our talented designers traveling to customer's homes, spending time with them, guiding them through the entire design process.
Clearly, we have become a world dependant on email, text messaging and Facebook. The significance of personal interaction and communication is too often disregarded.
So, in reflecting over this past years progress it is very clear that our biggest gain was that we had the opportunity of yet another year to maintain and grow solid and strong relationships at Youngs.
We are so appreciative of those that support us! We celebrate, together, the year that has passed and the year to come! Much success to all!
Happy New Year!

Let there be LIGHT!
Living in New England in December means you are forced to deal with certain things, such as snow, being cold, getting a cold, but worst of all, feeling like its always dark! So come December you realize just how important lighting is in your home.
Well placed overhead or built-in lighting is very important but often it can come across as flat and static. The mixing of indirect lighting with the use of table and floor lamps gives a space a soft, warm glow that makes all the difference. It can make edges look smoother, fabrics look brighter and even art becomes more vivid.
Function and effeciency no longer trump design or decoration. Chosing the lighting for a room can be as important as the paint on the wall or the art on the wall. Lamps add detail and depth. Whether they are subtle or impactful nothing can replace the warmth and eye appeal of a good looking table lamp.

Is it for cocktails or coffee?
Some of us call it a coffee table, others a cocktail table. Regardless, there can be no debate as to how important this piece is to a living space!
Some people look to a cocktail table for that added flair while others look for it to be a functional piece. A table that will stand up to the wear and tear of kids, pets and feet! No matter your needs the possibility of shape, style and even color, are abundant.
Metal, glass and reclaimed wood prove that durability and style are no longer at odds. Ottomans have also become very popular as cocktail tables because they allow you to lounge comfortably with your feet up! Easy to move around, they can also provide added seating if need be.
So make it a statement piece! Have it reflect your style AND satisfy your functional needs. They CAN do both!
Take a look at a few that occupy our showroom floor right now!

Seen and Heard
We are just getting back from the Furniture Market in High Point, North Carolina and couldn't be more excited about the great things we saw and the even more amazing things that will be coming home to us!
We really were impressed with the looks and the unique items that were presented all through the market! High Point can be a place of great inspiration and creativity! Certainly, we got our fill of both.
The size of Market is staggering. Needless to say you choose your showroom destinations wisely! Most showrooms offer vast selections and styles, from a buying standpoint, that can be the hardest part! You want it all!
Much like the fashion industry the home furnishing industry too has trends. Some are able to execute the looks better than others but once something is hot you see it all around! This past market certainly had it's fair share of trends. Here are a few that caught our eyes...
Rustic and Industrial-
Industrial modern still maintains its place as a big trend. Though this look can sometimes come across as a bit clunky, a new spin on it was with a more feminine twist , a softer sophistication. Edges softened, legs thinned, and finishes brightened. We also saw these items paired with floral prints and soft textures.
Rich, Natural and Pure-
Natural linen, burlap, jute and hemp are certainly not going anywhere and I don't think anyone minds! The fabric of Kings, the luxurious purity of linen is undeniable. Whatever the reasons, linen and other natural fibers speak to the growing trend of organics, simplicity, and understated elegance.
Color and Pattern -
Though color at market can be all over the place, typically there is a constant. Neutrals and greys are still the dominating hues across the board but dusty blues, sea foams and and emerald greens popped all through the market! They shown beautifully in fabrics, leather, carpets, and accessories.
The most widely used fabric or pattern at market was the (re)-introduction of Kilim carpets. We saw them used on everything from ottomans to chairs. The best part of this textile is its versatility. It not only offers great color variation but it also offers an eclectic, yet urban feel when paired with the right pieces! Plus, its super durable!
One thing still remains to be true; while some trends thrive others end as fast as they popped up- but good design is never short lived! CW

"You can only sleep in one bed at a time." -Nick Rhodes

The bedroom is a sanctuary where we relax and re-energize.
Its an intensely personal space- and the design of it even more so. Some want their bedroom to be a romantic and serene retreat while others seek layers of color and pattern for energy and inspiration.
Whatever your personal style the bedroom is the one room that can show the soul of the home.
Like all things, the bedroom too has evolved. There has been a clear break from convention. The usual formula for a bedroom no longer applies. The "bedroom collection or suite" has become more and more a past formality while the mixing and arranging of uniquely styled and shaped pieces is becoming the norm. But as much as things change we find that classic forms stay the constant.
As an example the Four Poster or Canopy Bed, originally designed and used by royalty in medieval Europe, is still very relevant today. The Four Poster bed displays graceful proportions- its never squatty. There's perfect balance between the vertical elements and the bed size. Often the unique details of a four poster bed are expressed through the post design.
Today's version has a traditional undertone but the curves and twists of the posts show us how the fanciful and the exotic can interlace seamlessly.
Another evolving form is the upholstered bed. The options for upholstered beds are nearly endless. The shape can be bold and ornate or understated and simple. The choice of fabrics is just as limitless. Whatever your look, upholstered beds can be as feminine or masculine as you like. They have the ability to set the tone or be a supporting element but either way the upholstered bed is a form that is truly timeless.
There are few rooms we love more than the bedroom. Our personal space dedicated to relaxing, romancing, sleeping, and dreaming! It’s the getaway within our homes or so it should be...
